Review of the Classic Kong Dog Toy (original kong)

This review was written by veterinarian, Dr. Marie. The classic Kong dog toy is one of my most recommended toys for dogs.  The Kong is knowing for being “indestructible”.  However, I have seen the odd dog that is still able to chew pieces off of it.  If your dog is very good at destroying toys, you may want to look into the more durable “Kong Extreme” toys for dog chewers.

Pros:

• Generally safe.
• Good for dogs who really love to chew
• You can put treats inside (or peanut butter or cheeze whiz) to keep a dog occupied

Cons:

• Make sure you buy one that is big enough!  A kong that is too small can be swollowed.  There have been many dogs who have had to have an expensive surgery because of a kong that was stuck in the stomach or intestines.  I have also seen a dog who had a kong stuck on his tongue and then his tongue swelled and we couldn’t get the kong off.
• If you do use food inside of it, it can sometimes be hard to clean.
